The importance of testing your social media setup
I had a social media freak out last night that I’m not proud of. It was completely my fault and I’m here to share it with you so hopefully you can learn from my mistake. First I’ll start with a little background. I’ve been dabbling in social media for our main company, mac-fusion, for years now. Since marketing isn’t my full time job I try and automate as much as I can. I’ve set up automatic feeds so if I post on one of our blogs it is automagically sent to twitter, it’s corresponding Facebook page and in some cases Tumblr. I like having this automation as it helps get my shared information everywhere without my interaction. When this was all new to me years ago I tested like crazy. I tested various plugins and services to see what would get me the best results. I’ve gotten a bit more savvy, a bit more busy, and now obviously, a bit too comfortable with social media.
Setting your custom Facebook page URL
Not only did I discover that there are businesses that don’t have their branded URL on Facebook, I also found that it’s not all that easy to find that information on the web. At one point you needed 1,000 “Likes” or “Fans” before your page qualified for a branded URL, now it’s just 25. Once you get your 25 likes head on over to https://www.facebook.com/username/ and if you are already logged in you’ll see a screen similar to the one above. Keep in mind you can do a custom URL for your personal account as well but for what we are doing you’ll want to click on the “Pages” pop up menu and select your page you would like to personalize. Once you’re done instead of having a URL that looks like this:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/THE-SOCIAL-MAC/87112226386
You’ll get a tidy little URL that looks like this:
https://www.facebook.com/TheSocialMac
Isn’t that better?
Don’t miss a thing- Follow us on Twitter, on FaceBook or subscribe to the RSS feed!
There are tons of great blog posts out there on how to set up a Twitter account for businesses. Even Twitter themselves give you a nice step by step walkthrough. The one thing they all do is immediately tell you to start following people. While in theory I get it, that is why you signed up, right? Here’s the problem, as a well established Twitter user when I get a follow email and it looks like this one, it doesn’t inspire me to look into you.
Clickable social media icons in your 10.6 Mail.app signature
This post was originally on mac-fusion.com, now that we have a dedicated Social Media blog I will be adding some of the relative post here.
With social media on the rise, there are now so many different ways for people to contact us. I found a visual way to display your network icons and have them be clickable. Keep in mind this only works in the Snow Leopard version of Mail. Previous versions can’t be done this way. To do this in Mail in Leopard and earlier entails CSS and coding skills that I do not possess. So if you are interested in this and have your Mac loaded up with Snow Leopard stick around for the video tutorial. Continue reading »
